Weather Balloons Employed to Smuggle Tobacco Products Closed Lithuanian Airport
Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
